Better by association...
Hey Hero! If you've started going through the Language Income Launch Guide, you know that I encourage you to join an association from the start, in the PREP stage. When you meet up with other professional translators and interpreters, you can take advantage of the opportunity to ask questions, share resources, and be considered for new projects. And if you supercharge your progress by serving as a board member, you can give back to your language community and help shape the decions and policies that affect you and your colleagues.
Speaking of serving, I've got exciting news! On Saturday, during its Annual General Meeting, I was elected Vice President of the Canadian Translators, Terminologists, and Interpreters Council (CTTIC)! I served on the Board from 2019-2023, and I'm excited to continue working with my colleagues from across the country.
I attended my first meeting of the Association of Translators and Interpreters of Nova Scotia (ATINS) back in 2016, and joined the Board that same night. Over the next seven years, I served as a Director and spent one year as Vice President of Professional Affairs. After years of freelancing on my own, being able to talk shop and network with other translators made me feel like I'd found my tribe. And a key conversation at a "coffee klatch" I helped organize led to an opportunity to train, work, and eventually become certified as a community interpreter. Get involved.
Last week, CTTIC held its first conference, and this week is the annual conference of the American Translators Association. I cannot overstate how important it is to be "in the room where it happens" with other language professionals and service providers. I met nearly all of my best (highest paying, sending regular work) clients in person, or at a conference. As a linguist, PLAN to attend a conference as part of investing in your business. It's a great time! Who wouldn't want to party with a bunch of word nerds? And you'll make your investment back, believe me.
If you can't make it this year, PLAN for next year. And be sure to let project managers know that you'll be available this week, because many linguists will take time off for the conference. This is a great opportunity to pick up more projects or to catch up on some professional development. It doesn't completely erase the FOMO, but it helps (I speak from experience).
