I still struggle with managing my money.
There. Now you know. I think we tend to look at everyone else and think they've got it all together. Because they only post the positive stuff, the good news, the shiny exterior.
That doesn't mean everyone else is on top of things.
My parents taught me to work hard, study hard, and get a good job (I consider freelancing a good job, lol). So, I started working and making money. And although I made a little more each year, it was still a struggle. More expenses. More taxes. More spending.
I love my mom and dad so much. And I mean no disrespect to them, but they didn't teach me how to budget. How to plan. How to invest.
And so I got in trouble. I took on debt. Then more.
One of the best things my mom did for me was to invite me out for a coffee with Sheila, her financial advisor.
I was 40. And working so hard. And feeling so overwhelmed, so ashamed, so behind everyone else my age.
"Is it too late for me?" I asked Sheila, sniffling over my double-double.
"It's never too late. You just need a plan," she assured me.
So we made a plan. And it took a few years to establish some healthy habits. And honestly, I still have trouble sticking to parts of our plan. But we get back together, and recalibrate, and keep moving forward.
Because it's never too late.
