The Bittersweet Gift of Freedom
This afternoon, our family said goodbye to one of our beloved budgies. Suddenly, we had to make a decision—and yet, in the middle of the heartbreak, I felt deeply grateful. Because I freelance, I didn’t have to ask anyone for time off. I didn’t need to explain why I was leaving. I simply went to the vet, sat beside and held my kids in their grief, and gave them the time and presence they needed. That, too, is part of the work we do—the human part.
This Wednesday, I’ll take my mom to visit her sister. They’re both elderly, and every visit feels more sacred. I can say yes to moments like these because I’ve built a business around my values. And while freelance life has its challenges (hello, unpredictable schedules), it also offers the profound gift of flexibility—especially when life hands us loss, or love, or both at the same time.
I won’t pretend it’s easy to build a business that gives you this kind of freedom. But I will say this: it’s possible. And it’s worth it. It starts with creating more predictability, more systems, and more income you can count on—so when life asks you to show up, you can.
Whether you’re deep in the hustle or just starting to dream about something different, remember: the life you're building isn't just about work. It's about being there for the people (and pets) you love. That’s the real success.
To your success,
Catharine
